AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRIES

Agriculture holds a special place in our region, which is recognized for the quality of its land and its favourable climatic conditions. It is the most important industry in the region. Our farmers mainly produce forage plants such as alfalfa, soya and corn. However, there are also some dairy producers, and operations that raise more exotic products such as llamas, emus and sheep.

Truck farming is also thriving. In addition to traditional vegetables such as carrots and turnips, our producers also grow large quantities of apples, strawberries, raspberries and even grapes. The latter crop has allowed, among other things, a local table wine called Château Bourget to emerge. Farm products may be found

in many places, including public markets in Ottawa.

Some 10,202 hectares of land are designated for agricultural production that amounts to some 34.4% of the total area of the city of Clarence-Rockland. These lands include class 1, 2 and 3 soils as classified in the Canadian Land Inventory. Because of the high volume of our production, there is considerable potential for establishing various processing plants.
